The Wednesday Night Skimo League is a ski mountaineering race series that provides a low-key and enjoyable racing environment for the community. Participants can expect a fun-filled evening of racing on Wednesday nights in January. Each race consists of skinning up a marked course and skiing back down. The league serves as a warm-up for the Whitefish Whiteout event in February. To participate in the league, online pre-registration is mandatory. The registration fee for each race is $25. Racers must check in between 5:00pm and 5:45pm to receive their bib. It is important to be on time or to arrange for someone else to collect your bib. Participants under 18 years old must have a parent or guardian sign a waiver of liability. The races take place at the Events Office, located at 3915 Big Mountain Road in Whitefish. The course starts and finishes at this location as well. LED lights and race gates mark the uphill and downhill sections of the course. Transition areas are designated with yellow flags and must be used. The courses are approximately 1-1.5 miles long with a vertical gain of 600-800 feet.There are six categories for racers: 1 Lap Female, 2 Lap Female, 3 Lap Female, 1 Lap Male, 2 Lap Male, and 3 Lap Male. The cutoff time for the last lap is 7:15pm. Awards will be presented at The Bierstube at 8:00pm.Transportation options include the SNOW Bus and shuttles within the village. SheJumps and The Mountain Guides have partnered to offer a women's specific AIARE 1 Avalanche course and optional Avalanche Rescue Course in Whitefish, MT. Led by The Mountain Guides, these courses provide comprehensive training in hazard evaluation, decision-making, and companion rescue in avalanche terrain. Participants will learn from experienced AMGA-trained and certified ski and splitboard guides, who will teach techniques for evaluating hazards and managing risk when traveling through avalanche terrain.The AIARE 1 course follows a hybrid learning model, with access to an online learning module one week before the course launch. An evening video chat session with the instructor will be held two days before the field days, where participants will review the online learning, discuss the current avalanche hazard forecast, and plan the tours. The Companion Rescue course offers an opportunity to learn and practice companion rescue skills, providing participants with the competence and confidence to manage worst-case scenarios.These courses are suitable for downhill skiers and boarders who are comfortable riding black diamond terrain at the resort or ungroomed backcountry snow on slopes up to 30 degrees. Participants must travel on touring skis or splitboards during the course. If you are new to touring or want to enhance your skills, consider taking the Backcountry Essentials course.Registration for these courses must be completed through The Mountain Guides website. The Level 1 AIARE course costs $495, while the Level 1 and Avalanche Rescue Course can be taken together for $690. Please note that guide gratuities are not included in the course cost, and a tip of 10-15% is highly recommended.To prioritize the health of the community, participants are advised not to attend the event if experiencing any cold-like symptoms. The 25th Nate Chute, supporting the Nate Chute Foundation, is here! This is the second longest running snowboard banked slalom event in the US, and it's happening on March 16th and 17th in Whitefish. Presented by Stumptown Snowboards, this two-day event features the Saturday Banked Slalom and the Sunday Boarder Cross. The cash purse for the event has now reached $4,500, and all proceeds go towards the Nate Chute Foundation, a nonprofit dedicated to suicide prevention among young people in Montana.To compete in this exciting event, you must register for both the Banked Slalom and the Boarder Cross. The overall winners of the Open Men's and Open Women's divisions will even earn an entry to next year's Mt. Baker Legendary Banked Slalom.
