Betty Rae's Ice Cream, based in Kansas City, is coming to Omaha (2025)

Betty Rae’s Ice Cream, based in Kansas City, is coming to Omaha later this summer.

It’s scheduled to open in early September at 6307 Center St., a couple of blocks from Aksarben Village. It’s the sixth location for the shop, which serves handmade and hand-scooped ice cream in 26 core flavors such as Lavender Honey, S’mores and Gooey Butter Cake.

It also has a monthly rotation of creative ice creams, including Lemon Poppyseed and Joe’s KC BBQ, that are made in collaboration with local businesses. Owners plan to debut a special Nebraska flavor close to opening day, according to a press release.

Waffle cones are made on the premises while customers watch. The menu includes ice cream sandwiches with house-made cookies, ice cream flights, shakes and sundaes. Pints and quarts are available to take home.

Omahan Zach Molacek is partnering with Kansas City resident Matt Shatto — who has owned Betty Rae’s since 2023 — to bring the shop to his home state. The duo became friends when Molacek and his family lived in Kansas City for 15 years. Their families socialized and the two men coached flag football together.

They stayed in touch when Molacek moved back to Omaha. He had been a big fan of Betty Rae’s and started a serious discussion with his friend about opening the Omaha location.

“I fell in love with Betty Rae’s and thought that Omaha would love it, too,” he said in the press release. “I’ve dreamt of owning (a) business, and who doesn’t love ice cream. It’s universal.”

The other five locations of the shop are all in the Kansas City metropolitan area.
